IT: Fun With Geometry

Kaleidoscopes, Ferris Wheels,
and Theorems of Euclid…
all come together in an innovative
computer program that our students
use to learn geometry. “This is a
cutting edge approach to geometry,
making our school a leader in
innovative teaching,” says
Pendleton's Math Department
Head, Judy Schettino. "We
purchased the universal rights
to the program, called Geometers
Sketchpad, and every geometry
student has it installed on their
computer." Color and animation
create interest as students move
and rotate their creations on the
screen. This inductive approach
to learning geometry brings the
subject to life and makes an
effective way to understand
Euclidean geometry.

Information TechnologyComputer literacy and technology are vital in preparing a student for the future. The Pendleton School community realizes the role of technology in transforming education in the 21st Century. Through the use of technological resources, IT supports the school’s programs for instruction, research, student services, and administration. Information Technology also facilitates an environment that provides individuals with opportunities to achieve competence through experience.
All students, grades 6 through 12 are required to have a laptop. Laptop use varies from class to class and is at the discretion of the teacher. Pendleton offers three different laptops for purchase. The Pendleton School has provided a computer lab for all students to use at their leisure. The lab is located in the main building and is currently set up with 17 new computers. With 2 moderators, this room is committed to be a safe and quiet environment. Also, the lab is now equipped with a state-of-the-art Promethean Board to enhance educational presentations and lessons. Every student is required to read and sign The Pendleton School’s Lab Use Policy (pdf) during school registration. This policy also outlines the use of our networks and software. In accordance with FCIS, The Pendleton School has implemented new software and equipment to ensure safe network use, content filtering, and privacy. Pendleton’s IT Department is dedicated to maintenance of our network as well as providing full support to all student and staff no matter what type or brand of laptop. MacBooks and iPod Touches were purchased this year along with new PCs and clicker technology to assist teachers in the development of innovative and effective lesson plans. Most recently, Pendleton has invested in equipment that allows us to provide live video feed to a remote audience. This is particularly effective in transmitting meetings and events to parents who cannot attend the function; they are able to view it in real time and feel a part of the audience. We continue to expand the video technology capacity so that many of our programs, activities, and events can be viewed live and/or recorded for the convenience of the viewer. Technology Staff
